With their grand presence and distinguished sound, grandfather clocks bring style and grace to any location.
History of Grandfather Clocks
Working by a system of suspended weights and a pendulum - all enclosed in a large cabinet - grandfather clocks have their beginnings in the 1650's, when the first of such clocks was created by Christian Huygen, a Dutch scientist. As the style evolved and became more popular, chimes were added the cases were made more beautiful, and the pendulum was given longer length to improve accuracy.
Grandfather Clock - Beauty and Variety
With many styles to choose from, grandfather clocks easily suit many tastes. Some popular crowns include the split pediment and finial ornament, or bonnet, flat, arched or federal styles. Other beautiful possibilities include moon dials on the clock face which display the lunar month and the moon's phases. Also, pendulums serve two purposes: it helps the clock keep accurate time and serves as a lovely adornment, rhythmically swinging.
Shut off Options
You can choose to activate the switch on a grandfather clock to disable the chiming mechanism during the night, or anytime. This feature does not affect the clocks ability to keep time.
Cable-Driven Clock Systems
For grandfather clocks that use a system of weights and a pendulum, gravity causes the hanging weights to lower at a particular rate. These cable-driven clocks must be reset using a key, usually once a week.
Chain-Driven Grandfather Clocks
Much like cable-driven grandfather clocks, chain-driven models will need to be adjusted every week. However, chain-driven clocks don't use a key; the weights are accurately repositioned by pulling the chains.
Additional Care
All quality furnishings require regular dusting and polishing to remove any dust and grime. Likewise, grandfather clocks will stay looking their best with regular care. As for the clock's working parts, have them professionally cleaned and oiled every few years.
Grandfather clocks are treasured heirlooms for many families. They are graceful and impressive, yet relatively easy to care for and operate.
